The No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team earned its 19th home court victory with a commanding 9-0 triumph against No. 15 Reinhardt University Tuesday at the GGC Tennis Facility.
GGC (23-0) extended the nation's longest winning streak in intercollegiate athletics to 78 consecutive wins. The team is 19-0 in home matches this spring.
The Grizzlies recorded two quick victories in doubles action as the tandem of junior Rafael Coutinho and sophomore Federico Herrera Duran won 8-2. Moments later, senior Gilad Berman teamed with junior Ayed Zatar for another 8-2 triumph, this one coming on the No. 2 court.
The third doubles point took over 90 minutes to decide a victor as sophomore Sergio Valinotti and freshman Valentino Caratini rallied from a 7-6 deficit to win the last three games. That victory gave the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead.
The team carried the positive momentum into singles action with Zatar winning 6-0, 6-2 on the No. 1 court. Sophomore Mika Kosonen sealed the victory for the hosts with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
Caratini won 12 of 14 games at No. 3 singles before Valinotti won by identical 6-1 set scores on the No. 5 court. Sophomore Gregor Hutterer picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. In the most competitive singles match of the day, Herrera Duran won a tight first set tiebreaker 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and then won six of the eight games in the second set.
