Men’s Tennis Duo Garner Academic All-America Honors

The Grizzlies have had 50 Academic All-American selections since 2017
Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis continues to excel in the classroom as well as on the court with two NAIA Academic All-American selections, announced by the College Sports Communicators on Wednesday, June 3.

Senior Luis Francisco Sampedro and sophomore Gian Durrer were honored for their academic and athletic achievements during the 2026 season. Francisco Sampedro collected first-team accolades and is a two-time Academic All-American. Durrer was a second-team honoree during the program's NAIA national championship team.

Francisco Sampedro forehandThe student-athletes were recognized in a nationwide vote among College Sports Communicators. Eligible students had to maintain a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average, compete in at least 75 percent of team matches and be at least a sophomore academic standing.

With the two selections this season Georgia Gwinnett is tied for sixth place with five total men's tennis Academic All-America selections nationally. Overall, the department has recorded 50 Academic All-Americans and at least one honoree for 10 consecutive years.

Francisco Sampedro, a psychology major, was a three-time NAIA All-American and earned first-team honors this spring. He posted a 15-1 record in singles matches this spring, with eight wins being on the No. 1 court. Franscisco Sampedro also went 17-1 as a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top-ranked NAIA doubles team. The senior capped his career by receiving the Ward-Ballinger Most Outstanding Player at this year's NAIA National Championship tournament.

Durrer actionDurrer, a business marketing major, received third-team All-American accolades after posting a 15-2 doubles record and an 11-2 mark in singles during the 2026 season. Eleven of his wins in doubles came in matches on the No. 2 court. Meanwhile, six of his singles triumphs were on the No. 4 court. Durrer stood No. 27 nationally in doubles, as ranked by the ITA.

Georgia Gwinnett College went 25-0 and captured its 11th national title during the 2026 season. It was the Grizzlies' 10th undefeated season in the program's 14-year history. The 11th championship is tied for the most recorded in NAIA men's tennis history.
