Women’s Tennis Ready to Begin NAIA National Championship Journey

Junior Maria Genovese won an individual national championship during the 2020-21 fall season and will look to lead the Grizzlies to a team title this spring
The top-seeded and undefeated Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team makes another trek to the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama, this week in search of a NAIA national championship. The journey begins Wednesday, May 19, with a Round of 16 match starting at 9 a.m. (central time).

The Grizzlies will face the winner of Tuesday's match between No. 16 seed San Diego Christian College (California) and No. 17 seed Reinhardt University (Georgia).

GGC is 23-1 all-time at the NAIA national championships, capturing four straight titles from 2016-19. The 2020 tournament was cancelled by COVID-19 pandemic health and safety restrictions.

The Grizzlies have won five overall national championships.

Pichler backhandThis year's team enters NAIA postseason play with a 19-0 record, which had them maintaining a No. 1 national ranking throughout the spring season. Along the way there have been regular-season victories against three of the top five national seeds: No. 3 seed Xavier University (Louisiana), No. 4 seed Indiana Wesleyan University, and No. 5 seed Montreat College (North Carolina).

GGC players have posted a 107-4 singles record with six of them registering 13 or more wins for the season. Four players have undefeated singles records, led by freshman Selina Pichler with a 19-0 mark. Freshman Marta Maestro follows closely behind with an 18-0 record and classmate Ale Ferrer has won all 15 of her singles matches. Sophomore Tereza Koplova also stands 15-0 in singles, with 14 wins coming on the No. 2 court.

Junior Maria Genovese, the NAIA singles national champion from the 2020-21 season's fall campaign, has posted a 14-1 record on the No. 1 court this spring. Freshman Iryna Lysykh has added 13 wins this spring.

In doubles, the Grizzlies won 89 percent of their 2021 matches during the regular season. The Koplova-Pichler tandem leads with 13 victories, while Ferrer has partnered with Lysykh to win all seven of their matches. The Genovese-Siska team has posted a 10-1 record.
