Rally Falls Short for Women’s Tennis in Home Loss

The No. 25-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team was unable to complete a singles rally and lost 4-3 to No. 18 Dillard University (Louisiana) on Thursday at the GGC Tennis Facility. The loss broke the squad's season-long three-match winning streak.

The Grizzlies (7-8) won three straight matches to tie the dual match, at 3-3, before dropping a tiebreaker in the third set of the deciding No. 4 singles match.

This came after both teams battled in the three doubles matches. Dillard (8-11) came out on top after winning on the No. 2 court by a 7-5 score.

The Blue Devils then quickly won singles matches on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts to build a 3-0 match advantage.

That's when GGC started its rally.

Sophomore MaryLove Edwards, ranked No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's latest NAIA singles national rankings, helped lead the singles charge by winning all 12 games at the top of the lineup.
Tan return
Freshman Minami Tan collected a 6-3, 6-2 triumph on the No. 3 court to bring the Grizzlies within a point, at 3-2.

Junior Suryanshi tied the match at three points apiece with another straight-set triumph on the No. 2 court. She won the opening set in a tiebreaker before closing out the match with a 6-2 second-set victory.

Thursday's match came down to the action on the No. 4 court. Junior Mireia Simon Sanchez won the first set by a 6-4 score before dropping the second set 6-3. She rallied from a service break deficit to then serve for the match in the third set. However, Dillard's Yiran Chen broke back and then won the match-clinching point with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker.

Coach's Corner
"It definitely hurts to lose the match. The girls had good energy for most of the match, but most of the match just doesn't get it done. Our inexperience showed today, but we will continue to push to improve for the remaining matches. I still believe our best tennis is ahead of us," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
