No. 1 Women's Tennis Earns Two Dominant Victories, Defeats No. 12 Cardinal Stritch 8-1

No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis earned a pair of dominating victories Wednesday in the Grizzly Spring Break Invitational at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The Grizzlies (9-0) defeated No. 12 Cardinal Stritch University 8-1 in the afternoon after a 9-0 victory against NCAA Division I North Carolina A&T University.

After two commanding victories at No. 1 and 3 doubles, GGC's No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Chiara Rebecchi and Debora Scurt battled back from a 6-1 deficit to win a hard-fought match through a tiebreaker. The tandem pulled out the match 9-7 in the tiebreaker to take an early 3-0 lead.

"That comeback is another indicator of how much heart and character our players have for one another and our program. That put us ahead 3-0 early and having all of the match's momentum," said Head Coach Chase Hodges.

Scurt added, "I brought up the level of my serve and we started to believe that the comeback could happen," said Scurt on the doubles comeback.

Junior Henar Munoz and sophomore Maria Prados Cid won all eight games on the No. 3 court. Then, the sophomore No. 1 doubles team of Emerald Able and Margarida Abreu earned an 8-2 victory.

GGC won five of the six singles matches to seal the victory. Able gave GGC the 4-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win on the No. 1 court. Junior Gabrielle Robinson won all 12 games at No. 3 singles, while Scurt won 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 6 court. Munoz won by identical 6-2 set scores at No. 2 singles. Finally, Rebecchi recorded a hard-fought, three-set victory on the No. 5 singles court. She won the deciding 10-point tiebreaker 10-1.

The victory was the 200th coaching victory of Head Coach Chase Hodges' career. He has guided the program to seven combined NAIA national championships in the four seasons of postseason eligibility.

"When you start a program, it is like having a child. You have an attachment and affection to it. I love being at GGC. Our teams have loyal support for each other," said Hodges.
