The Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team opened the Grizzly Spring Break Invitational with a pair of victories against NAIA nationally ranked opponents Monday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility.
The Grizzlies earned a 6-3 victory against No. 9-ranked William Woods University (Mo.) before sweeping No. 23-ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) 9-0.
GGC held a 2-1 advantage over William Woods after doubles. The sophomore doubles team of Emerald Able and Margarida Abreu won all eight games on the No. 1 court. Then, junior Henar Munoz and sophomore Maria Prados Cid earned an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Munoz gave GGC a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph on the No. 2 court and Able won 12 of 14 games at the top of singles lineup.
William Woods battled back with wins at No. 3 and 4 singles to get within 4-3. Both of the matches went to a 10-point third-set tiebreaker.
However, Prados Cid sealed the victory by winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-5 on the No. 5 singles court, after taking the opening set 6-0.
"Everybody was cheering me on. I was playing well in the first set and early in the second set. But, my opponent came back. It came down to a couple of points," said Prados Cid following her singles match. "It is a great feeling to have your teammates supporting you after you win a point in a tight match. It makes you want to string together good points and games."
Sophomore Chiara Rebecchi won a hard-fought three-set match at No. 6 singles. Rebecchi took the opening set 6-3 and won the deciding set by a 6-2 score.
Against Olivet Nazarene, the Grizzlies won 24 of the 28 doubles games and won in straight sets in each of the six singles matches. Sophomore Debora Scurt gave GGC a commanding 4-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Rebecchi clinched the team victory with the fifth point of the match on the No. 5 court.
