A day after being ranked the NAIA's No. 1 team for 16 consecutive national polls, the Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team earned a commanding 9-0 victory against No. 17 and previously undefeated Campbellsville University (Ky.) Wednesday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility.
Strong singles play helped the Grizzlies (11-1) pick up their second-straight match sweep. Sophomore Emerald Able won 12 of 13 games on the No. 2 court before senior Amy Morland picked up a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles. Morland's victory sealed the victory with the team's fifth point of the match.
Sophomore Debora Scurt recorded a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles, while classmate Chiara Rebecchi earned a 6-1, 6-2 win on the No. 4 court. Junior Henar Munoz won 12 of 13 games at the top of the singles lineup. Junior Gabrielle Robinson rounded out the winners with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, GGC won 24 of the 27 completed games to grab early momentum in the match. Robinson and Morland teamed up for an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles for the first completed match of the afternoon. The doubles team of Able and Munoz won all eight games on the No. 1 court. Rebecchi and Scurt earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Campbellsville came into the match with an 8-0 record for this spring.
Georgia Gwinnett College, a three-time defending NAIA champion, garnered all 14 first-place votes in the latest poll, conducted by a national panel of coaches. The team has been ranked No. 1 in the NAIA poll since mid-April of 2016.
