Student-Athletes Earn Fall Diplomas

Thirteen current or former Georgia Gwinnett College student-athletes completed their academic degrees by receiving diplomas during the college's 2019 Fall Commencement on Thursday, Dec. 12, at Infinite Energy Center.

Sommerkamp shotMen's soccer players Ivan Morales and Oscar Sommerkamp (left) completed their athletic careers this fall by helping the Grizzlies win the Association of Independent Institutions title and reaching the NAIA national championship final site in Irvine, Calif. Former men's soccer players Herb Sevilla and Cameron St. Prix-Mitchell completed their academic degrees this fall.

Eight former student-athletes graduated with degrees following the fall academic semester. That list included women's soccer players Kimmy Angelone and Melissa Hanken, baseball players C.J. Ballard and Ryan Lark, women's tennis players Maria Prados Cid and Chiara Rebecchi, men's tennis players Rafael Coutinho and Ayed Zatar, and softball player Aubree Cox.

In 2018, Angelone and Hanken helped GGC advance to the Round of 16 in the NAIA national women's soccer tournament, the deepest postseason advancement in program history.

Ballard runningBallard (left) was a member of two baseball teams that reached the semifinal round of the Avista NAIA World Series in 2019 and 2018. Lark was a catcher on the 2018 team.

Prados Cid and Rebecchi led the women's tennis team to NAIA national championships in 2019 and 2018. Prados Cid earned All-America honors in each of her two seasons on the court in Lawrenceville.

Zatar captured individual and team national championships in men's tennis. He helped the Grizzlies win team national titles in 2019 and 2018, while being a member of a NAIA championship doubles team. The double tandem also captured the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Oracle Cup Super Bowl title in 2018. Coutinho was a member of three team national championship and joined Zatar on NAIA All-American teams.

Cox at batCox (left) concluded her athletic career by receiving the 2019 A.I.I. Player of the Year award and being named a NAIA honorable mention All-American. The Grizzlies advanced to the semifinal round of the 2019 NAIA World Series.
