The University System of Georgia (USG) has approved Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) to apply for Division II membership within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The action follows approval by the USG Board of Regents at its Sept. 16 meeting and allows the college to explore opportunities for future NCAA Division II affiliation.

"This is an exciting milestone for Georgia Gwinnett College and a reflection of the remarkable growth of our institution and athletics program," said GGC President Dr. Jann L. Joseph. "The University System of Georgia's approval to explore NCAA Division II membership provides an opportunity to thoughtfully evaluate how we can continue advancing our mission while creating exceptional experiences for our student-athletes. We are immensely proud of the achievements of our Grizzlies and look forward to exploring avenues that support continued excellence, student success and institutional growth."

GGC currently sponsors 10 sports competing in the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for the 2026-27 athletic year. Women's volleyball is being added for the 2027-28 athletic year following USG approval early this summer.

"Georgia Gwinnett College Athletics remains fully committed to the NAIA and to competing at the highest level within our current conference and association," said GGC Executive Athletics Director Dr. Ian Potter. "At the same time, we have a responsibility to continually evaluate what is best for the future of our student-athletes and our institution. Exploring NCAA Division II is simply part of that process and reflects the continued growth and evolution of GGC Athletics."

Since launching athletics in 2012-13, the Grizzlies have established one of the most successful programs in collegiate athletics, capturing 22 NAIA national championships and 34 conference championships while earning national recognition for competitive excellence and student-athlete achievement.

The exploratory process does not affect GGC's current athletic affiliation. The Grizzlies will continue competing in the NAIA and the Continental Athletic Conference while the college evaluates potential NCAA Division II opportunities.
