Box Score Senior Dominique Fletcher scored a goal in the 108th minute to lift the Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team to a 3-2 double overtime victory at No. 23-ranked Cumberland University Tuesday afternoon.
GGC improved to 3-3-1 on the season with its second victory over a nationally ranked opponent in program history, also defeating Cumberland, 3-1, in 2016. Tuesday's match was the team's second straight nationally ranked opponent after tying Keiser University, 1-1, at home Sunday.
"This was a tremendous team effort. Playing two matches in three days and nearly 220 minutes of soccer is not easy," said Head Coach Dr. Mike Giuliano.
The Grizzlies took advantage of the fact that Cumberland went down a player after a red card was issued in the second overtime period. Junior Ana Gonzalez executed a corner kick opportunity to set up the scoring chance in the 108th minute.
Juniors Nicole Rodriguez and Lauren Moss each attempted shots that were saved by the Cumberland goalkeeper following Gonzalez's corner kick. On the third try, Fletcher managed to get a shot in the back of the net for the game-winning tally.
After a scoreless first half, Cumberland got on the scoreboard in the 58th minute on a goal from Rebecca Holloway.
Then, senior Amy Morland squared the match in the 69th minute with her first tally of the season. Fletcher helped set up the scoring chance. Two minutes later, Morland found the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The advantage was short lived as an own goal allowed Cumberland to tie the match in the 74th minute.
That set the stage for Fletcher's overtime heroics.
"I'm feeling good about where we are right now in the season," noted Giuliano.
Turning Point
Playing with a player advantage in the second overtime period, the Grizzlies took advantage in the closing minutes to score the game-winning goal.
