Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – Cayla Hebert scored a goal and assisted another for Mobile on Thursday night as the Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team fell to the second-ranked Rams at "The Jungle" soccer complex.
"We battled hard against a very good Mobile team, and this was a great learning opportunity for us," GGC head coach Chris Kouns said. "We gave up a goal in the first half that we probably should've done better on, and from there, we had to chase the game. I'm very proud of the way that we performed defensively, especially in the case of Jessica Beasley and Amanda Yarger, who were kind of on an island when we pushed forward in the second half."
Goals on each side of the half propelled the Rams to victory, beginning with an eighth-minute strike from distance by Rachel Forestell. Hebert, who provided the assist on the opening tally, went on to double the advantage nine minutes from the final whistle to effectively put the game out of reach.
Courtney Hicks played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Green and Gray, racking up nine saves on the night, which is tied for the fourth-most stops in a match in school history.
Leading goal-scorer Bristol Countess led the Grizzlies with three shots, but Mobile keeper Rebecca Wynne proved up to the task, stopping Countess once and Tiffany Rodriguez on another occasion to register the clean sheet.
GGC will return to action with another top 10 opponent on Saturday as the team will set out for Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on William Carey. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern.
NOTES: The Grizzlies have never beaten a ranked opponent, posting an 0-7 record … Earlier this year, GGC took a 1-0 lead into the half before falling 3-1 at then-No. 3 Keiser … The Grizzlies are 1-4 all-time vs. schools from the state of Alabama … Kelsey Griswold, a senior defender, has played in all 62 matches in school history … GGC is 13-13-1 all-time in the month of September.
