Kat Ihlenburg said. "Today, both Katie and Kayla pitched gems, and the defense played really well and was able to make the critical plays when Emory was threatening."
Kayla Byrom and Katie Lange tossed complete game shutouts for the Green and Gray. Byrom, who got the start in the day's opener, held an opponent scoreless for the second consecutive game, and she ended the day with eight hits allowed to move to 11-3 on the year. Lange gave up just four hits and struck out four to pick up her 10th win in 15 decisions this season.
Mary Burk, Jordyn Fones and Ashleigh Simmons each registered a pair of hits in the day's first contest as the team combined for 10. Both Burk and Haley Thompson knocked in a pair of scores, and the duo of Chelsi Palazzo and Tori Heinemann combined for six walks.
GGC opened up the scoring in the third as Cassidy Littlefield led off with a double and later touched home on a Thompson single.
Thompson would bring home another with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Simmons followed up moments later with a two-run single, and a Fones single and wild pitch brought two more home to make it 5-0.
Burk would tack on another pair in the top of the seventh with a single.
Littlefield once again spurred on the offense with a 3-for-4 showing in the day's second game, and she got it going with an RBI single in the third to score Heinemann for the opening tally.
An error brought home another in the sixth, and GGC would put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh as hits from Alycia Fields and Brittany Bruns drove in a pair to cap the game's scoring.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Wednesday as they will play host to second-ranked and defending national champion Auburn-Montgomery for a doubleheader at Grizzly Softball Complex, where GGC owns a perfect 22-0 record this season. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
