GULF SHORES, Ala. - Purdue Calumet put up six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday afternoon and the Georgia Gwinnett softball team couldn't mount a response as the Grizzlies fell 6-1 to the Peregrines in their final game at the Gulf Coast Invitational at Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
GGC, which dropped to 10-8 on the season, drew first blood in the opening stanza as Cassidy Littlefield led off the game by reaching on an error and then stealing second. She would score just moments later on a single by Alyssa Hathcoat, but that would be it for the day as the team collected just four other hits in the game.
Littlefield, Hathcoat, Abby Hulsey, Alycia Fields and Mary Burk each ended the day 1-for-3, as Peregrine starting pitcher Alison Kimble tossed all seven innings and allowed just one unearned run while striking out two and not allowing a walk.
Ashley Beyke got the start in the circle for the Grizzlies, and she was pegged with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. She now sits at 3-2 on the year, and reliever Kayla Byrom picked up the last five outs for GGC, giving up three scores on two hits and a walk.
After taking a slim 2-1 lead in the fifth on a Skyler Woods single, the Indiana-based Peregrines effectively put the game out of reach when Kaitlyn Skarecky uncorked a grand slam to make it 6-1.
GGC will return to action on Tuesday when it welcomes No. 24 USC Beaufort to Grizzly Softball Complex.
NOTES: GGC is 28-19-1 all-time in the month of March ... With 13 home runs already this season, the Grizzlies now stand just two shy of eclipsing last season's total.
