WEST POINT, Ga. - The Georgia Gwinnett softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday at West Point Park Softball Field as the Grizzlies took game one over Point in 3-2 fashion before falling 2-1 to the Skyhawks in the nightcap.
The Grizzlies now sit a 20-10 on the year, and with the release of the latest NAIA poll earlier Tuesday, the team is three spots outside the Top 25. Point is now 13-17.
As per usual, it was Cassidy Littlefield who got things going for the day, leading off the first inning of game one by singling and stealing to move into scoring position. An Abby Hulsey single and a Skyhawk miscue later in the frame to helped the Green and Gray to an early 2-0 lead.
Littlefield went on to finish the game 1-for-4, and Hulsey was 1-for-3 as the Grizzlies recorded eight hits in the contest. Alyssa Hathcoat was the only player to record multiple hits, ending 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
In the circle, Ashley Beyke tossed a complete game and improved to 7-3 on the year, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the fifth, GGC re-established the two-run edge as Jordyn Fones led off with a walk and scored after singles from Mary Burk and Hathcoat.
Point picked up a consolation run in the seventh, but Beyke stranded the tying score on third as she retired Tyler Jackson on a pop out.
Five players recorded a hit in the day's second game, but nine Point hits and five GGC errors came back to haunt Grizzly starter Katie Lange as she dropped to 5-4 on the year. The junior hurler surrendered two unearned runs on eight hits over five innings before ceding the circle to Kayla Byrom, who recorded a pair of strikeouts in the sixth.
Both Point runs scored in the bottom of the fourth before GGC finally got on the board in the seventh as Alycia Fields led off the seventh with a single. A Burk two-out double cut the deficit in half before a Tori Heinemann flyout ended the game.
GGC will return to action on Friday with a doubleheader at Montreat.
NOTES: GGC is 38-21-1 all-time in the month of March ... GGC is 18-12 all-time vs. schools from Georgia ... The Grizzlies have hit more home runs this season (19) than in either of the first two seasons in school history.
