March 18, 2015

Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE - Cassidy Littlefield enjoyed another strong outing on Wednesday as the Georgia Gwinnett softball team maintained its spotless record at Grizzly Softball Complex with a pair of victories over visiting Southern Wesleyan.

With the wins, GGC moved to 17-9 on the year and moved to 12-0 at home.

SWU dropped to 11-11 for the season.

Littlefield, a 2014 First Team All-American, was 5-for-7 over the day's two games, coming up a double shy of the cycle in the 7-3 victory in game one and doubling with a pair of scores in a tight 3-2 decision in the second.

"When we play together and with a lot of energy, we have a lot of success," GGC Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg said. "That's what we did today. They were very excited to come out and play today, and they take defending our home turf seriously."

She was far from the only star on the day, as pitchers Kayla Byrom and Katie Lange each tossed complete game victories. Byrom, who moved to 6-3 on the year, struck out nine in the contest and surrendered just four hits, and Lange, who is now 3-4, gave up a pair of scores in the first inning of game two before tossing a scoreless final six frames.

Alycia Fields and Littlefield both went 3-for-4 in the day's first game as the Grizzlies collected 12 hits. Both were instrumental in coming from behind in the day's opening inning as each singled and scored to tie things up at 2-2.

A two-out rally in the fourth put GGC ahead as a Tori Heinemann single and SWU error allowed Jordyn Fones to touch home, and Littlefield followed up with a home run to make it 5-2.

The Warriors reclaimed a score in the fifth, but Haley Thompson deposited a 3-2 pitch over the wall in center field to restore the three-run advantage, and an Abby Hulsey run-scoring single an inning later accounted for the final score.

SWU would score twice in the first inning of the second game as well, but Lange would allow just three hits without issuing a walk over the game's final six innings as the Grizzlies came-from-behind for another victory.

The comeback started as Littlefield led off the bottom of the first with a single and then stole second and scored on a Chelsi Palazzo single.

In the third, Heinemann led off with a single to center and Littlefield doubled her home to tie things up. Palazzo completed the rally with a sacrifice fly later in the frame to score Littlefield.

The Grizzlies will now hit the road for 10 consecutive road games, beginning with doubleheaders at Coastal Georgia and Middle Georgia this weekend.

NOTES: GGC is 35-20-1 all-time in the month of March ... The Grizzlies are 12-0 at home this season, run-ruling the visitors in all but four games ... Overall the team is 37-15 all-time in Lawrenceville and 30-9 at Grizzly Softball Complex ... GGC is now 14-8 all-time vs. schools from South Carolina ... The Grizzlies have hit more home runs this season (18) than in either of the first two seasons in school history.
