Senior goalkeeper Alex Hays kept GGC close by making 15 saves, but the Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the 2014 UMobile Classic to ninth-ranked William Carey (Miss.).
The Lady Crusaders totaled 33 shots on the day but Hays, who had set her previous best just a day earlier, allowed one goal in each half.
Offensively, the Grizzlies were able to muster nine shots, four of them on target, but could not find the back of the net.
“We came right out and got after them,” said GGC head coach Domenic Martelli. “We really did some great things and created some chances but it ended up being two miscues that were the difference in the game.
“Between the second half of last night and the first half of tonight, we draw a ton of positives and are really proud of that. We have never faced this level of competition back to back and we are raising the bar for how well we played against two quality teams. Now we need to show up from the first minute to the 90th minute and play our full game.”
William Carey scored at nearly the identical midway point of each half. A defensive ricochet got through Hays’ arms in the 27th minute and in the 71st minute, a sliding stop popped free to WCU’s Suzanne Waitz alone in front of the net.
“We defended, we ran and got after them,” added Martelli. “We missed a couple half chances and shut down a lot of their very good players. They are an excellent team.”
Freshman Amy Morland led the Grizzlies with a pair of shots on goal.
The Grizzlies have two games remaining on their six-game road trip. The team will return to play next Saturday at 2 p.m. against Montreat (N.C.) and after playing at Milligan (Tenn.) the following day, the Grizzlies will prepare for their next home contest on Sep. 21 against #4 Northwood (Fla.).
