Box Score Sept. 2, 2014

Box Score

GGC 6, SCAD Savannah 2

The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team erupted for six goals- including three from junior Mary Vernetti- in taking down SCAD Savannah on Monday, 6-2, on the Bees’ home field in Hardeeville, S.C.

The Grizzlies built a 4-0 lead thanks to four goals in the game’s first 29 minutes of play, jumping out to a big lead en route to their second straight win.

Vernetti scored on all three shots on target as the Grizzly attack scored six times out of eight shots on goal. Senior Andreah Creevey and freshman Bristol Countess scored for the second straight game, while senior Alex Hays also got into the act.

Georgia Gwinnett sits at 2-1 on the season and SCAD is now 2-3.

“We finally played the way we knew we could play,” said Grizzlies head coach Domenic Martelli. “SCAD is a very strong team so that helped us put all of the facets of the game together. We scored on restarts, we defended as a group, we had individuals attacking and being dangerous, we won balls in the air and finished well.”

The Grizzlies got on the board in the 18th minute when Creevey began the onslaught, then scored again under four minutes later with Vernetti’s first tally as junior Kelsey Griswold assisted on both goals.

Another two-plus minute stretch turned the lead into 4-0 by the 29th minute as Vernetti added a second tally and Countess scored for the second time in as many games. GGC would take their four-goal advantage into halftime after a 10-6 shot advantage.

The Bees looked to make a comeback with a score five minutes into the second half, but the GGC defense tightened once again and another 30 minutes went by before the score changed again.

Vernetti scored unassisted for the final time in the 82nd minute to make it 5-1.

After SCAD made it 5-2 three minutes later, Hays, who began the game in net, made it forward to score her first goal on offense for the final 6-2 margin.

Hays and freshman Courtney Hicks combined to make five saves for the Grizzlies, each playing one half in net.

It was the third straight season the teams have met and GGC’s second straight win in the series, the first victory by the road team.

The win came after Saturday’s 3-0 victory over USC Beaufort as the Grizzlies continue their season-long six-game road trip. Up next, GGC travels to Mobile, Ala., this week for another pair of stiff tests against teams in the national rankings.

First up is a Friday night contest at Mobile (receiving national votes) at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by a Saturday night clash with #9 William Carey (Miss.) in a neutral-site affair.
