The Georgia Gwinnett softball team used a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching to take 4-3 and 8-3 victories over host Embry-Riddle on Sunday on the final day of the ERAU Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Grizzlies improved to 3-0 in the weather-altered tournament while the Eagles fell to 1-2.
Senior Marlee Morales and sophomore Haley Thompson each totaled five hits on the day while sophomore Ashley Beyke recorded a win and a save in the circle.
The Grizzlies racked up 22 hits over the two games.
“Overall it was very good execution by our team this weekend,” said Grizzlies head coach Kat Ihlenburg. “We had good performances by our pitchers and we were happy to see them step up as we hit our stride.
“We are looking forward to continuing to grow with this program and we certainly have a lot of good games coming up with a lot of work to be done,” Ihlenburg added.
Game One- GGC 4, ERAU 3
Junior Jordyn Fones went 3-for-4 to key the Grizzly offense as GGC built a three-run lead and hung on late to defeat ERAU, 4-3, in the first half of Sunday’s doubleheader.
Thompson and Heather Kilar each doubled and went 2-for-3 for GGC, which improved to 2-0 with the win.
The Grizzlies racked up 12 hits on offense while sophomore Kayla Byrom (1-0) earned the win in her Grizzly debut, striking out three over 6.1 innings.
Ashley Beyke entered in the seventh inning to keep Embry-Riddle, which scored twice in the inning, from completing its comeback as she earned her first save.
Game Two- GGC 8, ERAU 3
Beyke (2-0) went the distance to record her second win of the tournament, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts in an 8-3 GGC victory.
The Grizzlies belted three triples and were led by Morales’ 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs.
Heaven Hinton scored a game-high three runs while Thompson went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and a triple. Thompson and Heather Kilar each had two RBIs.
Georgia Gwinnett jumped in front with three runs in the first inning and built a 7-0 lead by the fifth.
Inclement weather in the Daytona Beach area forced the cancellation of Saturday’s play.
The Grizzlies return to action next Saturday by visiting Columbia (S.C.) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
