LAWRENCEVILLE - A well-organized Point defense made all the difference on Friday afternoon as the Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team couldn't connect on a handful of late chances, drawing 0-0 after two overtimes at Grizzly Soccer Complex.
"I think we play well when the game is more free-flowing, but Point is a very smart team and very good defensively," GGC Head Coach Domenic Martelli said. "We had a number of chances, but they still made it hard for us to do the things that we do well. I still think we did enough to win the game, but we couldn't find the goal."
Through the game's opening 90 minutes, things couldn't have been more one-sided as the Grizzlies (5-5-1) out-shot the visitors from West Point, Ga., 13-0. The best chance came just moments before the whistle as Nikki LeFevre's would-be match-winner went over the bar.
The Skyhawks (7-2-3) put their only shot on goal in the first overtime period, but it was dealt with by GGC goalkeeper Magaly Gutierrez, who recorded her second consecutive shutout. The one-way traffic continued throughout overtime as the Green and Gray finished with four shots. A corner in the dying seconds would come up fruitless as the whistle blew.
Mary Vernetti finished the game with four shots, and Dominique Fletcher added three and put one on frame as GGC out-shot point 17-1.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Saturday against the University of the Cumberlands. Kickoff at Grizzly Soccer Complex is slated for 4 p.m.
