Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis sophomore Kanan Gasimov earned a convincing straight-set singles semifinal victory on Saturday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional at the GGC Tennis Facility. That claimed him a spot in the championship match on Sunday, September 27, at 1 p.m.

Gasimov, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 2 seed Serafin Zund from Tennessee Wesleyan University in the semifinal match. The Grizzly player won the opening set by a 6-4 score before finishing off the victory by winning all six games during the second set.

The sophomore has won each match at this weekend's ITA South Regional in straight sets.

Gasimov will face unseeded Nicolas Cortes from TWU in Sunday's championship match. The winner will qualify to compete for the NAIA singles national championship at the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia, on October 15-18.

Earlier in the day, the No. 2-seeded doubles team of senior Nicolas Philibert and sophomore Mariano Hasenkopf lost by a 6-3, 7-6 (1) score to the No. 3 seed from TWU in a semifinal round match.

"Kanan moved really well on the court and controlled his emotions. When he can stay on top of the baseline and stay calm, it allows him to play his best tennis. Our entire men's team was there to provide support for him. That support helped him get over the finish line in the match. In doubles, we weren't as healthy as we would have hoped for, but each set came down to one break point. We battled but weren't as sharp as the Tennessee Wesleyan team," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
