The Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team has players scattered throughout the semifinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional's singles and doubles draws following Friday's action at the GGC Tennis Facility.

DRAWS

GGC's No. 3-seeded doubles pairing of juniors MaryLove Edwards and Suryanshi Suryanshi advanced to the semifinal behind an 8-4 victory against a team from Tennessee Wesleyan University. The Grizzly duo will face the tournament's No. 2 seed from TWU on Saturday, September 26, at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, the other semifinal has GGC's team of junior Maria Clara Zotti and sophomore Marta Machado after earning an 8-5 triumph against the No. 4-seeded team that included teammates senior Mireia Simon Sanchez and sophomore Minami Tan. Clara Zotti-Machado will now face a team from SCAD Atlanta on Saturday.

In singles, top-seeded Edwards opened her tournament run with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 Round of 16 victory against SCAD Atlanta's Nora Louko. She will play No. 4-seed Ivet Prat in Saturday's semifinal round.

Suryanshi, the No. 6 seed, won all 12 games in her morning match against Denisa Alexie Raducu. She later picked up a 7-5, 6-3 victory against TWU's Ruslana Kovalenko, the No. 3 seed, during Friday's quarterfinal action. Suryanshi will face SCAD Atlanta's Carmine Becoude, the No. 7 seed, on Saturday.

Zotti fell in a marathon three-set battle to Becoude in the Round of 16, dropping the deciding third set by a 7-5 score. Zotti won all six games of the opening set before the SCAD Atlanta opponent turned the tables with a 6-1 win in the second set.

Machado lost in another marathon three-set match to Prat in the Round of 16. She fell in the deciding third set by a 7-5 score after winning all six games during the second set.

"It was an amazing day for the women. We talk exclusively about performance controllables and, even in the losses that we had today, I thought we competed exceptionally hard and took a step forward. The more the players do that, the sense of belief and inspiration will grow throughout the group. It's exciting that we are in the semifinals for both draws," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
