Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis players advanced to the semifinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional's singles and doubles draws following victories Friday at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The Grizzlies have a doubles team and one singles player in semifinal round of the fall tournament.

DRAWS

The No. 2-seeded doubles team of senior Nicolas Philibert and sophomore Mariano Hasenkopf scored an 8-4 victory over fellow GGC teammates sophomore Luciano Larosa and freshman London Vasilescu on Friday morning. The Philibert-Hasenkopf pairing will face the No. 3-seeded team from Tennessee Wesleyan in the semifinal round on Saturday, September 26, at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, junior Aryan Jit Singh and sophomore Kanan Gasimov, the No. 4 seeded team, were upset in the quarterfinal round by a pairing from Tennessee Wesleyan University, falling 7-3 in a tiebreaker.

In singles, Gasimov, the tournament's No. 3 seed, scored two straight-set victories on Friday. A 6-4, 6-1 triumph over No. 6 seed Lucca Guercio from Tennessee Wesleyan advanced him to the semifinal round. He opened the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against TWU's Agustin Gaia. Gasimov will now face TWU's Serafin Zund, the No. 2 seed, on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Also, Hasenkopf cruised to a straight-set victory by 6-3, 6-0 scores against Tennessee Wesleyan's Mario Monclus Martin. The tournament's top seed then fell in three sets to TWU's Rocco Mariani, dropping the deciding third set by a 6-3 score. Hasenkopf won the opening set by a 7-5 score before Mariani came out on top in the second set, with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker.

Sophomore Luka Vuglar, the No. 7 seed, was upset by TWU's Ethan Rand in three sets, falling in the deciding third frame by a 6-4 score. Vuglar won the opening set by a 6-2 score before Rand evened the match with a 6-4 second-set score.

"Kanan is continuing to play his best tennis and we are alive in both draws (singles and doubles). Overall, there are things to work on," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
