Men’s Tennis Begins NAIA National Championship Journey Wednesday

The Grizzlies are the top seed and enter the national championship tournament with 10 titles in the last 11 seasons
The top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team begins its quest for another NAIA title with a second round match in the 2026 UTR Sports NAIA National Championship tournament on Wednesday, May 13, at the Mobile (Alabama) Tennis Center, starting at 9 a.m. central time.

The Grizzlies (21-0) will play the winner of a first-round match between No. 16 seed William Woods University (Missouri) and No. 17 seed St. Thomas University (Florida), taking place on Tuesday, May 12.

GGC has claimed 10 national championships in 11 seasons of postseason eligibility. The team captured the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA indoor national title earlier this season.

Villarruel backhand actionSenior Santiago Villarruel is the two-time defending NAIA singles and doubles national champion. He currently is ranked No. 5 nationally in singles with an 8-1 record, including a 7-1 mark in No. 1 court matches.

Senior Luis Francisco Sampedro has compiled a 12-2 singles record and stands No. 7 nationally.

Meanwhile, the Villarruel-Francisco Sampedro doubles pairing is the NAIA's top-ranked duo with a 12-1 record.

Senior Francisco Perez Esnaola is ranked No. 13 nationally in singles after posting a 12-2 regular-season mark. Five of his triumphs have come on the No. 3 court.

Freshman Luka Vuglar has won all 10 of his singles matches, including a perfect 7-0 mark on the No. 6 court. He stands No. 51 nationally in his inaugural collegiate season.

Carlos Garcia backhandSenior Juan Carlos Garcia is 16-0 in singles action and has a 15-2 doubles mark in 2026. He ranks No. 55 nationally in singles.

Freshman Yerassyl Yerdilda has identical 15-2 singles and doubles records this season, highlighted by a 9-1 mark on the No. 2 singles court. Yerdilda rounds out the nationally ranked Grizzlies at No. 64.
