Baseball Hosting Marquee Top-5 Weekend Showdown

The Grizzlies play their second straight nationally ranked opponent with this weekend's home series
The No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team will host No. 5 Johnson University (Tennessee) in a marquee three-game weekend series, starting with a nine-inning contest on Friday, April 3, at the Grizzly Baseball Complex, starting at 5 p.m.

The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4, beginning at 1 p.m.

The Grizzlies (31-3) scored a 10-5 victory against No. 24 Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Georgia) on Tuesday.

GGC features a balanced offensive attack with three players hitting over .400 on the season, led by junior infielder Peyton Watts with a .422 batting average. He has had four triples and hit four home runs.

Junior infielder Chris Tillery is hitting at a .406 clip and has scored 26 runs.

Junior infielder Payton Fort is the reigning Continental Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week. He has a .405 batting average and five home runs while driving in 36 runs. Fort stands second on the team with 40 runs scored.

Garcia stanceJunior outfielder Trey Smith is tops on the team with six homers and 41 RBI to go along with a .390 average. Junior infielder JJ Garcia has hit a team-high 13 doubles and is hitting at a .387 clip.

Junior outfielder Jay O'Neill has scored a team-high 41 runs and started all 34 games.

Collectively, the Grizzlies have a .344 batting average, which is tied for seventh nationally among NAIA teams.

On the mound, senior left hander Gavin LeBlanc has a 3-1 record, 1.33 earned run average and 29 strikeouts across six starts. Classmate Shane Anderson allowed one hit and struck out 10 batters across seven scoreless innings in the opener of last Saturday's doubleheader at Cumberland. The right hander is 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA in 11 total mound appearances.

Senior lefty Carson Judd stands 4-0 with a 2.77 ERA in four starts.

Johnson (27-5) has won six of its last seven games, including a series victory last weekend against Truett McConnell University (Georgia). Luke Wilson leads the team with a .378 batting average and 34 runs scored. Travis Hobbensiefken has had nine doubles as part of a .350 average. Pitcher Colby Reynolds stands 6-0 and has a 3.79 ERA and 54 strikeouts. Kaleb Townsend has recorded six saves across 16 appearances.

MEET THE COACHES 
Georgia Gwinnett: Tommy Goodale is in his first season guiding the Grizzlies, compiling a 31-3 record so far. He was an assistant coach at GGC during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Goodale previously served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Murray State University (Kentucky) and LSU Eunice, a perennial junior college powerhouse.
Johnson: Dave Serrano is in his third season leading the Royals, posting an 87-45 record. He has also had coaching stints at NCAA Division I UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, University of Tennessee, and Cal State Northridge.
