Men’s & Women’s Tennis Set to Host SCAD Atlanta in Tuesday Matches

The Grizzlies begin a busy week of three matches with Tuesday's home contest against SCAD Atlanta
The nationally ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's and women's tennis teams are seeking to continue their impressive spring seasons with dual matches against nearby SCAD Atlanta on Tuesday, April 8, at the GGC Tennis Facility, starting at 5 p.m.

The men's squad (12-2) bring No. 1 NAIA rankings by the national organization and Universal Tennis Sports into the match after a 6-1 home victory against Emory University (Georgia) on March 27.

Key contributors to the team's success this season have been senior Jeremias Rocco and junior Santiago Villarruel, who have combined for a 13-1 record in doubles; senior Andoni Garmendia, with 11 victories in singles; and junior Luis Francisco Sampedro, also a winner of 11 singles matches.

A strong player has been senior Aleksandr Kalinin, who has won singles matches on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 courts, along with contributing to victories in doubles.

Lespes actionMeanwhile, the women's team (9-2) will be playing its first dual match since March 3.

Back on the court will be senior Isid Hernandez, who has a team-leading eight singles victories; senior Justine Lespes, with a 7-0 singles mark this spring; freshman Diana Ilie, with a 7-2 record in singles, including being 3-0 on the No. 5 court; and freshman MaryLove Edwards, who also has posted seven singles wins.

Sophomore Alexandra Melnikova has shown consistent improvement throughout the season, providing significant contributions – and team depth – in singles and doubles matches.

The doubles pair of freshman Cherysh Henry and Lespes has won five of its six matches this spring.

SCAD Atlanta's men's team (7-11) has gained significant victories in Appalachian Athletic Conference matches, posting a 6-2 conference mark. The women's team (12-6) has an 8-1 record in AAC matches. The GGC men's program has a 5-0 historical record against the Bees, with four triumphs on the home court, while the Grizzlies' women's squad has a 2-0 record in past matches against the Atlanta opponent, haven't squared off on the court since 2019.
