Men’s Tennis Picks Up Sixth Win of Season

The top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team collected its sixth win of the season, defeating No. 7 Xavier University of Louisiana 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility. The match opened a six-match home stand for the team.

The Grizzlies (6-0) quickly grabbed momentum in the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. Senior Jeremias Rocco teamed with junior Santiago Villarruel for a convincing 6-0 victory at the top of the doubles lineup.

Two new-look teams closed out the first point of the match. Senior Aleksandr Kalinin and junior Luis Francisco Sampedro clinched the point with a 6-3 win on the No. 3 court. Then, senior Andoni Garmendia and freshman Kamron McIntosh-Ross scored a 6-4 triumph on the No. 2 court.

In singles, Kalinin gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court. Freshman Gian Durrer won his collegiate debut match by a 6-0, 6-3 score at No. 6 singles. Francisco Sampedro secured GGC's fourth point of the match behind a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles.
McIntosh-Ross emotion
McIntosh-Ross collected a 6-4, 6-4 victory on the No. 5 court for his first singles win as a Grizzly. Garmendia also was a winner in straight sets to round out the team's strong performers, collecting a 6-0, 6-2 victory that sealed the dual match victory.

GGC was playing its first match since winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA Indoor National Championship earlier this month.

Coach's Corner
"We made a doubles lineup change and it brought good results. Santiago and Jeremias continue to dominate in their (No. 1 court) position and our two other new doubles teams stepped up and played well today. We look to continue this momentum throughout the rest of the season. Two new Grizzlies got an opportunity to play singles and get their first wins. I was proud of the effort the guys put forth throughout our singles lines today," said Head Coach Hannah Keeling.
