Men's Tennis' Win Streak Reaches 70 Matches Following Pair of 9-0 Victories Monday

Its 70 straight wins for the Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team following shutout victories against William Woods University (Mo.) and Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Monday afternoon in the Grizzly Spring Break Invitational at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The Grizzlies' 70-match winning streak is the longest string of success in collegiate athletics, and each of the past 19 matches have been won through shutouts. The team is a four-time defending NAIA national champion and it is ranked No. 1 in the current NAIA national poll.

GGC (15-0) got off to a fast start against NAIA No. 7 William Woods by sweeping the three doubles points. Senior Gilad Berman and sophomore Federico Herrera Duran picked up an 8-2 victory at the top of the doubles lineup. The freshmen duo of Serge Becerra and Valentino Caratini won eight of 10 games on the No. 3 court. Junior Ayed Zatar and sophomore Sergio Valinotti was victorious by an 8-5 score at No. 2 doubles.

Then, the Georgia Gwinnett College won all six singles matches in straight sets. Zatar clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 singles. Becerra won the first set 6-0 before his opponent retired on the No. 3 court. Berman won by identical 6-3 set scores at No. 2 singles. Caratini won 12 of 15 games at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Mika Kosonen picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No. 6 singles court. Herrera Duran rounded out the winners by 6-2 set scores at No. 4 singles.

In the afternoon match, the Grizzlies won 24 of the 26 games in doubles and 72 of the 75 singles games against Olivet Nazarene. Valinotti recorded a victory at No. 6 singles, while Becerra won all 12 games for GGC's fifth point of the match on the No. 3 singles court.

The Grizzly Spring Break Invitational continues with two matches Wednesday, March 7, as GGC is scheduled to face NCAA Division I North Carolina A&T University, starting at 9 a.m. Then, the Grizzlies play Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) at 2 p.m.
