The No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team picked up an impressive 7-2 victory over No. 13 Xavier University of Louisiana Friday to open play in this weekend's Grizzly Invitational at the GGC Tennis Facility.
The Grizzlies improved to 2-0 on the season and won their spring home opener.
GGC swept all three doubles matches to grab early momentum of the matchup of nationally ranked teams. Sophomores Emerald Able and Margarida Abreu earned an 8-6 victory atop the doubles lineup. Junior Henar Munoz and sophomore Maria Prados Cid were an 8-5 winner at No. 2 doubles. Junior Gabrielle Robinson and sophomore Chiara Rebecchi rounded out the doubles winners with an 8-6 triumph on the No. 3 court.
In singles, the Grizzlies won on the third through sixth courts to pick up the victory. Robinson won all 12 games to give GGC a 4-0 advantage, and Prados Cid clinched the team triumph with a 6-0, 6-3 win on the No. 4 court. Abreu and Rebecchi had wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions, respectively.
