Strong Singles Play Leads Women's Tennis to Spring-Opening Victory

Six singles wins led the Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team to a 8-1 victory at NCAA Division II University of South Carolina Aiken in Thursday's spring season opener.

The Grizzlies, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA preseason poll and winner of 38 consecutive matches, earned victories on the No. 1 and 3 doubles courts to hold an advantage heading into singles action.

That's where GGC recorded straight-set triumphs at all six positions. Sophomore Margarida Abreu picked up the first victory on the No. 4 court by a 6-3, 6-0 score. Classmate Emerald Able won 12 of the 14 games at the top of the singles lineup, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead.

Junior Henar Munoz clinched the team victory with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Maria Prados Cid won by identical 6-4 set scores on the No. 3 court. Munoz and Prados Cid were playing in their first dual matches for GGC.

In another set of GGC debuts, sophomore Chiara Rebecchi picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 5 singles, and junior Gabrielle Robinson won eight of the 10 games at No. 6 singles.

The Able-Abreu doubles team registered an 8-3 win at the top of the lineup, while Rebecchi teamed with Robinson for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
