Box Score The Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team pulled out a 3-1 victory over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) on Wednesday evening, capturing its second win of the 2016 season. Three Grizzlies contributed goals in the win while two others tallied assists in the victory.
"I'm pleased with tonight's win," stated GGC head coach Steve DeCou. "We played great attacking soccer. Our guys scored some crafty goals tonight, and it was a team affair with three different goal scores and multiple assists given."
The Grizzlies (2-0-1) dominated the offensive side of the pitch in both halves, tallying 16 total shots in the match. In the opening frame, the Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when junior Jack Gurr lifted a cross to forward Jon Conner, allowing Conner to land a header over the outreached hands of Brewton-Parker's goalkeeper.
Georgia Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead into the intermission as the Grizzlies continued to not allow a goal in first five regular time halves and two extra time periods of play to begin the season.
Samuel Sampaio Gomes gave the Grizzlies the 2-0 advantage just 14 minutes into the second half, launching a strike from just outside the 18-yard box. Gomes' shot was set up by a long ball from junior transfer Jhovany Contreras.
GGC's streak without allowing a goal came to an end in the 63rd minute of play. The Barons cut GGC's lead to 2-1 as striker Facundo Centurion broke the Grizzly defensive back line and landed a shot from 10 yards out. GGC's streak came to a close after 263 minutes of play.
Heading into the 80th minute, the Grizzlies received an insurance goal on a spectacular set piece off a free kick that ended with a bicycle-kick goal by Pierre Semudenge Mujene. The Barons fouled the Grizzlies 10 yards from the 18-yard box, setting up the free kick. Gurr lined up the chip shot, landing it in Contreras' reach. Contreras, who already had one assist earlier in the match, headed the ball to Mujene. In an acrobatic move, Mujene flipped backward, landing the shot in the right side of the net.
"I'm proud of the work the guys showed and their ability to make necessary changes when it matters most," stated DeCou. "It's now time to shift our focus to the weekend's match and grow each day."
The Grizzlies are back in action on Saturday when they host Columbia International (S.C.) in the two squads' first-ever meeting. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m.
