The No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett women's tennis team moved one match closer to achieving its goal of a second NAIA National Title in three years on Friday as the Grizzlies collected a 5-1 win over No. 4 SCAD (Ga.) in the semifinals of the 2016 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship in Mobile, Ala.
Georgia Gwinnett (17-2) has now won seven matches in a row and are 10-0 against NAIA opponents. With the win, the Grizzles are now 10-1 all-time in NAIA championship matches and advance to the NAIA Championship match for the third-straight year in-a-row.
"Our doubles play has been fantastic this week," stated GGC head coach Chase Hodges. "We hope to continue this trend tomorrow in the championship match. SCAD has a very strong team, and this is a huge win for us. We will rest tonight and be ready for tomorrow's championship match."
The Grizzlies swept doubles play for the 3-0 lead heading into the break. The NAIA's top-ranked doubles duo of Valeria Podda and Sophie Feller defeated SCAD's Camille Gbaguidi and Paige Murdock 8-6 while the pairs of Chiara Di Salvo & Alyona Vasilyeva (8-2) and Klara Dohnalova & Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff (8-1) picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Di Salvo captured GGC's fourth point of the match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of SCAD's Julia Albuquerque while Vasilyeva wrapped up the GGC 5-1 victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Angie Dahnous.
With the win, the Grizzlies move on to the NAIA Championship match where they will face off with No. 7 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 10:00 a.m. Eastern at the Mobile Tennis Complex. Lindsey Wilson advances to the championship match after defeating No. 2 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) on Friday 5-4.
