The No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett women's tennis team moved one match closer to achieving its goal of a second NAIA National Title in three years on Thursday as the Grizzlies picked up a win in quarterfinals action at the 2016 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship in Mobile, Ala.
Georgia Gwinnett (16-2) recorded the first win of the day in the women's tournament, rolling past No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan, 5-0. With the win, the Grizzles are now 9-1 all-time in NAIA championship matches and advance to semifinal play for the third-straight year in-a-row.
"Simply put, we took care of business against Indiana Wesleyan quickly today," stated GGC head coach Chase Hodges. "The women were ready to go to battle this morning after an evening of rest and really showed their toughness and grit in the sweep. Our doubles play continues to lead the team, and it feels great to be heading back to the Final Four."
The NAIA's No. 1 ranked doubles duo of Valeria Podda and Sophie Feller swept their match, 8-0 over IWU's Katie Wilson and Lucia Solis to help solidify three doubles match victories on the day. The pair of Chiara Di Salvo and Alyona Vasilyeva combined for an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 spot while Klara Dohnalova and Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff clinched the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 post.
In singles play, Podda, who is the NAIA's top-ranked singles player, captured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Wilson at No. 1 singles while Vasilyeva clinched the 5-0 victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Mikayla Mirazzi.
