The second-ranked Georgia Gwinnett women's tennis team blanked NCAA Division II's 15th-ranked Valdosta State (Ga.) 5-0 on Sunday afternoon to pick up its 11th win of the 2016 season.
"Our women continue to impress me and picked up a great win over a Top 15 Division II opponent," stated GGC head coach Chase Hodges. "Today, we maintained our focus and bounced back with a win after a tough battle against West Florida."
The Grizzlies (11-2) grabbed a 3-0 lead at the break, sweeping all three doubles matches. The pair of Alyona Vasileva and Chiara Di Salvo collected the first Grizzly victory at No. 2 doubles, defeating VSU's Laura Ubeda and Sabrina Schmidt 8-5. Moments later, the duo of Klara Dohnalova and Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff captured the second GGC win of the match at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-5. Valeria Podda and Sophie Feller wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-4 at No. 1 doubles against Bea Morales and Anke Poncelet.
Georgia Gwinnett, who needed two singles match victories to clinch the win, grabbed two singles victories at the number four and six spots. At No. 4 doubles, Di Salvo swept Valdosta State's Joanna Lario, winning 6-0, 6-0. Pinones-Haltenhoff clinched the 5-0 victory for the Grizzlies at the six spot, defeating Taylor Vinge 6-0, 6-1.
GGC returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Gainesville, Ga., to face No. 6 Brenau in head-to-head action. First serve is set for 2 p.m. The Grizzlies return to the GGC Tennis Facility on Sunday, April 17 as they host Tusculum (Tenn.) on Senior Day. Georgia Gwinnett will celebrate the collegiate careers of Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff, Luma Schwab, and Victoria Svensson in a pre-match ceremony starting at 1:45 p.m. The match, which begins at 2 p.m., will be broadcasted live on the Grizzly Digital Network.
