Georgia Gwinnett's second-ranked women's tennis team picked up its 10th victory of the year, defeating NCAA Division II foe West Alabama 8-1 on Wednesday.
"The women did an exceptional job today to collect their 10th win," stated GGC head coach Chase Hodges. "We are continuing to make improvements with each win and are meshing well as a team."
The Grizzlies held the 2-1 advantage over the Tigers after doubles play. Notably, the pair of Alyona Vasileva and Chiara Di Salvo (11-0) remained undefeated on the year, defeating the duo of Liliana Araucz and Andrea Tomassone 8-1.
The Green and Gray swept singles play, taking all six matches. Valeria Podda took three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-2) to defeat Amine Mukhametshina in the number one singles spot while teammate Klara Dohnalova won the number two singles slot with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Georgina Morral.
Sophie Feller (7-5, 6-4) and Vasileva (6-3, 1-6, 10-4) also picked up wins for the Grizzlies at the three and four spots, respectively.
Di Salvo captured a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the number five spot while Luma Schwab rounded out the GGC representation with a 6-1, 6-0 win over UWA's Sandra Florez.
Georgia Gwinnett is now in double digits in the win column for the season as it improves to 10-1 after Wednesday's victory while West Alabama drops to 11-3 on the year with the loss.
GGC returns to action on April 9 when it travels to Pensacola, Fla., to participate in the University of West Florida Invitational. First serve against NCAA Division II's No. 4 West Florida is set for 3:00 p.m.
