ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - Freshman Sam Helmink couldn't have scored her first career goal at a better time for the Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team as the Buford native found the back of the net in the game's final seconds to seal a 3-2 victory over Montreat at the Anglin Athletic Fields on the campus of Milligan.
It was a quick start for the Grizzlies (3-3) as Andreah Creevey and Mary Vernetti put their names on the scoresheet early to hand GGC the 2-0 advantage. However, the Lady Cavaliers (1-4) would begin to find their footing in the game, and eventually equalized shortly before the half.
"There were some pretty difficult conditions for us today, so it was great to come out of it with a win," head coach Domenic Martelli explained. "I think we were able to expose them early with a couple goals, but their two forwards were two of the most explosive that we've gone up against. They just kept chipping away at us."
The game appeared destined for overtime as it turned over to the second half as neither team could mount many scoring chances. A late corner kick fell fortunately to the feet of Helmink, who wasted little time in sealing GGC's third victory of the season.
"It's always nice for someone to score her first career goal like that," Martelli said. "The ball fell to her, and she put in in the net with just a few seconds left."
The Grizzlies will head back to Anglin Athletic Fields on Sunday to take on Milligan. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
