A four-goal flurry in the second half of Saturday’s game pushed the Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory at Cumberland (Tenn.) in Lebanon, Tenn.
Trailing 1-0 very early on, the Grizzlies rallied with four of the game’s five second half goals, including two from sophomore Jamie King, to move to 2-0 on the season.
A 26-shot barrage paid dividends for GGC as Pierre Semudenge Mujene and Martin Lugo also scored for the Grizzlies. Cumberland fell to 0-2 with the defeat.
“We set out to come away with two wins this weekend and while we are still growing in the opening weekend of the season, we accomplished our goal,” said GGC head coach Steve DeCou.
Georgia Gwinnett went down 1-0 after a third-minute tally from Marty Owens for the host Bulldogs.
The Grizzlies could not produce a tying score over the remainder of the half, but came out firing in the second frame with 21 more shots.
Semudenge Mujene converted after a cross from Tyler Woodruff to tie the game for the Grizzlies in the 55th minute.
In the 73rd minute, King briefly gave the Grizzlies the lead on a rebound effort as Rasmus Holmqvist picked up the assist.
Cumberland answered seven minutes later to tie the game, 2-2.
The Grizzlies wasted little time in regaining the lead, using a second tally from King on an assist from Ibrahima Sissoko to go back up, 3-2, less than one minute later.
The final goal would come in the last minute of the contest as Lugo stretched the GGC lead to two goals with German Rodriguez tallying the assist.
Goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe picked up three saves in net for GGC while Ian Hamilton was forced to turn aside nine Grizzly shots on the other end.
Georgia Gwinnett now returns home for its first contest in Lawrenceville on Wednesday, Sep. 3, hosting Truett-McConnell at 7 p.m.
