The Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team scored twice in each half and pitched a shutout defensively en route to securing a 4-0 victory on Saturday night over Tennessee Wesleyan College in Lawrenceville.
The Grizzlies featured four different goal scorers on a night that they built a 19-5 total shot advantage with nine shots on target. GGC improved to 7-3 on the season and 4-2 at home. The Bulldogs fell to 5-4.
“I thought we were much improved tonight in a number of different areas,” said GGC head coach Steve DeCou. “We were able to push the ball forward to our attackers up front early in the game and build a lot of chances from there.”
The Grizzlies got on the board in the 17th minute when Martin Lugo cleaned up a rebound opportunity after a Bulldogs save, slotting home the free ball for a 1-0 advantage.
Ruud Grol added to the GGC lead 17 minutes later, finishing a corner kick off the foot of Juan Giraldo with a header strike from in close for a 2-0 GGC lead at the half.
The Grizzlies kept up the pressure throughout, using three saves from Lewis Sharpe to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Essie Aburime added a third score in the 84th minute, making it 3-0 by cleaning up a loose ball from just outside the box.
The Grizzlies kept attacking until the very last second, scoring as time expired on a Rene Enang chip into the upper corner for the final 4-0 tally.
Enang now has a team-high six goals on the season while Lugo’s five stand second.
The Grizzlies wrap up their four-game homestand with a 6 p.m. start next Saturday night against Young Harris in Lawrenceville.
