Natalie Leone and Mary Vernetti each scored for the Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team as the Grizzlies shut down Montreat College (N.C.) in a 2-0 victory Thursday night in Lawrenceville.
The Grizzlies posted their sixth shutout win of the season, holding the Cavaliers to just four shots, two on goal.
Georgia Gwinnett has won seven of its last eight games and stands at 11-3-1 on the season, setting a new single-season win mark. Montreat fell to 9-6.
The Grizzlies posted a 15-4 shot advantage and Mo Gutierrez needed just two saves in net.
Leone popped a header in traffic off of a set piece over Montreat goalkeeper Melina Wilkerson in the 37th minute as the Grizzlies got on the board before halftime.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Mackenzie Bailey played a pass into the box for a streaking Mary Vernetti, who finished in close for the Grizzlies’ insurance tally and her sixth goal of the year.
“(Montreat has) some very good defenders and they are a team that isn’t used to giving up a lot of goals,” said Grizzlies head coach Domenic Martelli. “I'm very proud of our team for a total team effort as it showed in a game where we created opportunities off of our defensive play. As we keep finding ways to win, we’re working toward being able to play against some of the top teams in the country at the end of the season.”
The Grizzlies have just three games remaining in the regular season. GGC is next in action on Saturday, playing its final road game at Truett-McConnell at 2 p.m. The Grizzlies then return to Lawrenceville for home contests Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.
