Despite a strong first-half defensive performance, the No. 18-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 25 SCAD Savannah (Georgia) in Sunday afternoon's Gray Out match at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
The Grizzlies (3-3-0) outshot the visitors by a slim 11-10 margin in dropping their first home match of the season. Sunday also marked the first time that the team had been shutout this season.
SCAD Savannah (5-1-1) struck for its first goal in the 31st minute on a shot by Lovisa Henell that followed a pass from Cali Wuestefeld.
GGC applied pressure in the early moments of the second half, attempting two corner kicks and had a shot from sophomore
Alliyah Rosales being blocked in front of the opposing goal.
Wuestefeld then floated a shot from 20 yards away into the upper left corner of the GGC goal in the 54th minute to give the Bees a 2-0 advantage. She later converted a breakaway goal, following a turnover from a GGC corner kick, to extend SCAD Savannah's lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute.
The hosts threatened to score late when a shot from the top of the 18-yard box by sophomore
Dara Naismith hit the crossbar in the 84th minute.
Senior
Jade Perrin led the Grizzlies with five shot attempts, including three being on goal, across the 49 minutes she played on Sunday.
The remaining six shots for GGC were spread across the starting lineup, showcasing a team effort. Sophomore
Hannah Lorenz took two corner kicks but was not able to convert them into goals.
Turning Point
SCAD Savannah's Cali Wuestefeld scored twice within a two-minute span across the early moments of the second half to give the visitors a commanding 3-0 advantage. Both goals were unassisted. Her second tally came in the 56th minute on a breakaway following a GGC turnover off a corner kick.
