Baseball Travels for In-State Midweek Game

The No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team travels to Brewton-Parker Christian University for a midweek clash on Tuesday, March 24, in Mount Vernon, Georgia, starting at 3 p.m.

The Grizzlies (27-2) are coming off a three-game series sweep against Freed-Hardeman University (Tennessee) last weekend, tallying 41 runs. The team has won its last nine games.

Tuesday's game is the second road midweek contest of the season, winning at No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan University 12-4 on March 3.

GGC is hitting at a .333 clip with 307 hits, 276 runs scored, and 126 stolen bases (ranking fifth nationally). All of these statistics are spread across the team's productive lineup.

Junior infielder Peyton Watts continues to lead the Grizzlies offensively with a .415 batting average. He has scored 27 runs and driven in an additional 25 runs.

Junior outfielder Trey Smith is tops on the team with five homers and 33 runs batted in.

Gann swingFreshman outfielder Vick Gann is batting .395 and is 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts. Junior infielder Payton Fort has scored 34 runs, hit nine doubles and stole 21 bases.

Junior outfielder Jay O'Neill leads GGC with 36 runs and junior infielder JJ Garcia has driven in 21 runs across 20 starts.

On the mound, senior left hander Gavin LeBlanc leads the rotation with a 1.50 earned run average. He has a 3-1 record and 28 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .161 batting average.

Junior left hander Peyton Castellow, a two-time Continental Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honoree, stands 2-0 with a 3.79 ERA and a team-high 42 strikeouts. Senior left-handed pitcher Carson Judd is 4-0 with a 2.77 ERA across eight appearances.

Sophomore reliever Fisher Smith is 2-0 with 20 strikeouts in 22 innings and a 2.45 ERA in 11 mound appearances. Senior Max Miller has recorded two wins out of the bullpen.

Brewton-Parker Christian (10-21) has lost its last seven games, being swept at No. 13 William Carey University (Mississippi) last weekend. Michael Son leads the Barons with a .366 batting average and nine doubles. Fred Guzman Diaz has connected on eight homers and driven in 30 runs. Caleb Strott is hitting at a .302 clip. Pitcher Vincent VerPault stands 2-1 with a 4.26 earned run average in 10 relief appearances.

MEET THE COACHES 
Georgia Gwinnett: Tommy Goodale is in his first season guiding the Grizzlies, compiling a 27-2 record so far. He was an assistant coach at GGC during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Goodale previously served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Murray State University (Kentucky) and LSU Eunice, a perennial junior college powerhouse.
Brewton-Parker Christian: Aaron Larsen is in his 10th season leading the Barons, posting a 167-344 record. He previously served as the interim head coach at Bethany College (West Virginia).

GGC scored 30 runs on 28 hits in last Saturday's doubleheader sweep against Freed-Hardeman University (Tennessee), a team receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The Grizzlies also had nine bases in the series.

PROVIDING THE POWER
The Grizzlies hit four home runs during last weekend's series sweep against Freed-Hardeman, including a pair of round trippers by junior outfielder Jay O'Neill. He connected on a two-run walk-off home run in Friday's series opener. The team connected on two homers in the series finale. Junior infielder-outfielder Lance Bratlien hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning before O'Neill connected on a three-run home run during the seventh inning.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Grizzlies have won all 11 previous meetings against Brewton-Parker Christian University. The latest matchup back in 2024 was 17-8 victory. Seven of those 11 meetings have come in Mount Vernon, Georgia.
