Women’s Tennis Splits Saturday’s Home Action

The Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team split a pair of home matches on Saturday, falling 4-3 to Campbellsville University (Kentucky) before collecting a 4-0 sweep against the University of Pikeville (Kentucky) at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The Grizzlies (4-7) played four matches across the last four days.

Sophomore MaryLove Edwards tied the opening match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top of the singles lineup.

This came after the hosts won the doubles point with junior Mireia Simon Sanchez and freshman Minami Tan capturing the clinching point behind a 6-2 triumph on the No. 2 court. Senior Nicoleta Anestiadi and Edwards teamed to win all six games at the top of the lineup.

GGC then took a 3-2 advantage after Simon Sanchez won by identical 6-1 set scores at No. 3 singles.

However, Campbellsville rallied behind a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, winning the opening frame in a tiebreaker 8-6 before closing out the match with a 6-4 score in the second set. The Tigers completed the comeback victory by winning at No. 4 singles, after dropping the opening set, with victories in the next two sets, including a 6-1 triumph in the deciding third set.

In Saturday's second match, the Grizzlies jumped out a 2-0 lead by winning 12 of the 13 doubles games. Then, Anestiadi recorded a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory on the No. 3 court to clinch the match.
GGC split four matches during the busy weeklong home stand.

Coach's Corner
"Our doubles play has been a highlight lately. We are competing better throughout the lineup. That's the necessary first step we had to take. Now, it's about relishing the opportunity to play in big moments and learning how to close out matches," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
