Edwards Collects Singles Win as Women’s Tennis Opens Season

Sophomore MaryLove Edwards picked up a hard-fought three-set victory at the top of the singles lineup as the Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 6-1 loss at NCAA Division II No. 3 University of North Georgia on Friday afternoon in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Edwards won the opening set against Anatasia Opolska on the No. 1 court. She then won a dramatic tiebreaker by a 10-8 score in the third set for the visitors' lone point of the match.

In doubles, the team of junior Mireia Simon Sanchez and freshman Minami Tan picked up a 6-3 victory on the No. 2 court. The Night Hawks clinched the match's doubles point with a 6-4 score on the No. 1 court.

Friday's season opener marked the GGC debut for senior Nicoleta Anestiadi, Simon Sanchez and Tan, along with new Head Coach Tom Rees.

Coach's Corner
"Despite being shorthanded, I was very pleased with a number of things and it was fun to see MaryLove come through at No. 1 singles. The season is long and today was a positive beginning for this year's team and its journey," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
