Men’s Basketball Returns to Winning Ways

The Georgia Gwinnett College men's basketball team got back on track Wednesday evening with a 91-81 triumph at Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The victory broke a two-game losing streak.

The Grizzlies (15-6) placed three players in double figures, led by junior Jahiem Berry with 25 points. Freshman Patrick Johnson had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds while senior Deonte Martinez scored 15 points.

GGC put 16 consecutive points on the scoreboard to build a 23-11 advantage after a 3-point field goal by freshman Amari Morgan with 12:20 remaining in the first half. Later, senior Manny Montgomery made a layup to stretch the margin to 36-15 with just under seven minutes left in the period.

Junior Brasen James converted a dunk to give the visitors a 47-18 advantage at the 3:35 mark, and the Grizzlies held a commanding 50-29 lead into the halftime break.

Spartanburg Methodist (4-15) began the second half with a 17-7 offensive run to move within 11 points, at 57-46, after CJ Terrell made a jump shot six minutes into the period.

Montgomery actionHowever, GGC came right back with Morgan making a 3-point field goal and a basket by Berry to take a 79-64 lead with 8:04 remaining in the game.

The Pioneers made one last push and got within 87-81 with 49 seconds left.

The Grizzlies once again had an answer as freshman Mario Hill Jr. made three key free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory.

Both teams made 50 percent of their field goals, with GGC connecting on 12 3-pointers.

Wednesday's contest was a rematch of the inaugural game of GGC's new program – a 106-70 Grizzly victory on October 23 in the Convocation Center.

Coach's Corner
"You always have to be appreciative of wins, but our defensive effort for a majority of the game continues to let us down. That effort fell significantly short of our standard for this team. If we don't change our ways soon, this season will come and go as an extreme disappointment," said Head Coach Chase Teichmann.

Turning Point
Spartanburg Methodist trimmed GGC's near 30-point first-half advantage to a single-digit margin late in the contest. GGC held onto an 87-81 lead with 47 seconds left before freshman Mario Hill Jr. successfully converted three free throws on the team's ensuing offensive possession. That secured the road victory.
