Women’s Basketball Continues Winning Ways

Playing its first home game in more than a month sparked the Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball team to pick up a 61-47 victory over Truett McConnell University (Georgia) in the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies (13-6) extended their winning streak to a season-best six consecutive games. The team was playing at home for the first time since defeating Montreat College (North Carolina) 69-50 on December 16.

The hosts used a productive second quarter, outscoring Truett McConnell (4-15) by a 23-10 margin to take the lead for good. The Bears made eight of their first nine shots to take an early 21-17 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

GGC stayed competitive by making five 3-point field goals in the first quarter. The team then made 57.1 percent of its field goals and four more 3-pointers in the second quarter. Freshman Christen Collins hit back-to-back 3-point field goals in the opening minute of the period to give the Grizzlies a 23-21 advantage. She connected on another shot from beyond the distant arc to stretch the advantage to five points, at 26-21, with 8:18 left in the quarter.

Taylor runningA jump shot from freshman Hope Taylor capped a 15-2 offensive run to start the second quarter and built a nine-point advantage, at 32-23, with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Nylaa Fuller hit a 3-pointer to give GGC a 40-31 halftime advantage.

Truett McConnell got within four points, at 41-37, at the midway point of the third quarter before the hosts got on track again offensively, closing the period on a 7-2 run to once again build a nine-point lead, at 48-39, following a basket by Taylor.

Collins scored a game-high 24 points behind 6-of-12 shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Griffin came off the bench to score 14 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Peyton Hearvey added nine points and Taylor collected 13 rebounds in the triumph.

The Grizzlies' defense has held all six opponents under 50 points during the winning streak.

"Our goal each game is to keep our opponent under 50 points. They (Truett McConnell) came in averaging 49 points and we held them under that total. I thought we did a good job defensively after the first quarter," said Head Coach Tory Wooley.

Coach's Corner
"We had a really good second quarter. Christen (Collins) hit some shots and Jayma (Griffin) came into the game and did a great job of orchestrating our offense against (Truett McConnell's) zone defense. She had 14 points, nine assists and five rebounds – an all-around game for her. It has been over a month since we played at home, so we wanted to give our fans something to cheer about. We were excited to play again on our home floor," said Head Coach Tory Wooley.
