No. 22 Women’s Soccer Scores 3-1 Upset of Top-Ranked SCAD Savannah

The No. 22-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team recorded its second win over a No. 1-ranked team in program history, defeating defending NAIA national champion SCAD Savannah (Georgia) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Hardeeville, South Carolina.

GGC had previously defeated top-ranked William Carey University (Mississippi) 3-2 in overtime to close out the 2018 regular season.

The Grizzlies (2-1-0) were efficient and effective offensively, placing five of their seven shots on goal, with three finding the back of the opposing net.

Freshman Barbora Kadlecova gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute by scoring off a corner kick from sophomore Nova Eskelinen.

Sophomore goalkeeper Elle Sarter stopped all six shots she faced during a strong first-half performance. The Bees (2-1-0) registered 12 shots across the opening 45 minutes of action.

GGC extended the lead to 2-0 following an unassisted goal from senior Natalie Maguire in the 54th minute. Eskelinen then recorded her second assist of the match to contribute to a tally by junior Rikke Steenhold in the 65th minute as the team built a commanding 3-0 advantage. Steenhold's two career goals have come against the Bees, scoring in GGC's 6-1 win in the 2022 season opener.

SCAD Savannah got on the scoreboard in the 74th minute on an unassisted goal from Mia Gomez.

Maguire paced the Grizzlies' offensive attack with two shot attempts.

Twenty-three different Grizzlies appeared in the triumph.

Coach's Corner
"This is a big win for us. We weathered the storm (against the top-ranked Bees) during the first 20 minutes. The first goal that came off a set piece gave us a lot of confidence. We continued to play our game and got a couple more goals to continue building positive momentum (in the match). Elle made some key saves for us. Our super power this year is our depth as we got good contributions from 20 players," said Head Coach Dr. Mike Giuliano.

Turning Point
The Grizzlies doubled their lead to 2-0 in the opening moments of the second half as senior Natalie Maguire scored an unassisted goal during the 54th minute. The visitors stretched the margin to three goals at the midway point of the second half.
