Southeastern University (Florida) scored a goal with five minutes remaining in the first half and later added an insurance goal in the second half to defeat the No. 17-ranked Georgia Gwinnet College women's soccer team 2-0 at the Grizzly Soccer Complex Friday afternoon as part of National Food Bank Day.
Southeastern (3-0-1) struck first in the 42nd minute when a shot by Olivia Hadad found the lower left corner of the goal.
The Grizzlies (2-2-0) nearly squared the match with 10 seconds left in the first half as junior
Rikke Steenhold drew a foul inside the 18-yard box leading to a penalty kick. However, Southeastern goalkeeper Sofia Diaz stopped the shot from freshman
Hannah Lorenz.
"Missing the penalty kick was emotionally devastating as they took positive momentum into halftime. We needed to overcome difficult situations," said Head Coach
Dr. Mike Giuliano.

GGC also threatened in the early moments of the second half, but a tackle prevented a one-on-one situation against the Southeastern goalkeeper inside the opposing box.
Southeastern struck GGC's goal post on an initial shot by Hadad in a scramble sequence during the 55th minute and eventually netted an insurance goal in the 64th minute by the Fire's Sara Irurozki.
Southeastern outshot GGC by a 19-10 margin and placed 10 of their shots on goal.
Friday's match marked the first appearance of the 2025 season for junior goalkeeper
Rirei Sasaki, leading to eight saves.
The Grizzlies attempted more corner kicks than Southeastern, by a 7-1 margin, during Friday's action. Lorenz led the hosts with a match-high five shot attempts. Freshman
Barbora Kadlecova attempted two shots to lead GGC's offensive attack.
Coach's Corner
"We had some defensive breakdowns that led to their goals. Accessing the game, the problem is that we got shutout again, so not everything was because of the defense. We played our worse game of the season. We have a lot to work on," said Head Coach
Dr. Mike Giuliano.
