The Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball team picked up its first win over a nationally ranked opponent, defeating No. 24 Lindsey Wilson University (Kentucky) 57-54 on Wednesday evening to cap a season-opening, five-game home stand in the Convocation Center.
"We feel that we can compete and be a top 25-team ourselves. I'm proud of the players and coaching staff coming together for this complete performance. It took everybody and the players came ready to play," said Head Coach
Tory Wooley.
Freshman
Christen Collins led a second-half offensive charge and finished with a school-record 26 points, behind five 3-point field goals. The Grizzlies made 5-of-11 3-pointers (45.5 percent) and 19-of-22 free throws (86.3 percent) while forcing 11 turnovers during the second half.
GGC used a 9-3 run during a four-minute span in the fourth quarter to take a 50-49 lead following a pair of free throws from sophomore
Jamya Griffin. Earlier, Collins converted a layup and buried a 3-pointer to bring the hosts within a point with 2:42 remaining in the game.
Collins later connected on another trifecta from behind the arc with 50 seconds left to give the hosts a 53-51 advantage.

"I was confident after seeing the first one (3-pointer) go in. This is a big win," said Collins.
Lindsey Wilson (3-1) turned the ball over on consecutive possessions. Collins took advantage of the mistakes and aggressively moved the ball to the basket, forcing the Blue Raiders into committing defensive fouls. She successfully made all four free throws to extend the lead to six points, at 57-51, with 15 seconds remaining.
The visitors trimmed the deficit in half after Amelia Hodges made a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Following a foul and two GGC missed throws, Lindsey Wilson had a shot to tie the contest. Hodges' desperate 3-point attempt fell short with four seconds left.
GGC turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds to allow the visitors another desperation scoring chance. However, a last-second heave missed the mark.
The Grizzlies rallied from a 25-19 halftime deficit by using a strong third quarter that featured 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line. Griffin connected on all six of her attempts at the line.
Both teams shot 5-of-13 from the floor (38.5 percent) during the fourth quarter, with GGC making three 3-pointers compared to just two for the Blue Raiders and outscoring the visitors 8-2 at the free throw line across the final 10-minute stanza.
Collins scored 15 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter. Griffin was a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line to account for her 12 points in the victory.
Coach's Corner
"We wanted to control the tempo and give them fewer possessions. We knew that if we went with a zone defense and controlled their possessions, the game was going to be in our favor. We felt like if we could keep the score in the 50s and 60s, it would favor us," said Head Coach
Tory Wooley.
