Men’s Basketball Wins High-Scoring Affair

The Georgia Gwinnett College men's basketball team shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor and needed every one of those made field goals in earning a 107-103 victory at Montreat College on Saturday afternoon in Montreat, North Carolina.

The Grizzlies (6-2) connected on 69.2 percent of their shots to score 60 points in the first half, enjoying a 60-42 halftime advantage.

Junior Jahiem Berry scored a career-high 21 points and was 5-of-6 from behind the 3-point field goal arc to lead five GGC players being in double figures. Juniors Devontre Chaney and Brasen James each added 16 points, while senior Drew Kramer had 14 points and freshman Amari Morgan chipped in 12 points off the bench.

The visitors scored 10 straight points early in the first half to grab a 23-11 lead following a fastbreak layup from Morgan with 13:22 remaining in the period. Later, a 3-pointer from James extended the Grizzlies' lead to 32-13 at the halfway point of the first 20 minutes.

Montreat (2-3) used a 15-4 offensive run to trim the deficit to eight points, at 36-28, following a layup from Caleb Moore with 6:28 left in the first half.

GGC continued to shoot the ball well during the opening period, scoring 10 of the final 12 points, and then built an early 74-47 second-half advantage following a dunk by James at the 16:57 mark.
James 3-pointer
A 3-pointer by Montreat's Amare Elshoush brought the Cavaliers within 13 points, at 87-74, midway through the second half. Later, another 3-pointer from RJ Manginello made it a one possession game, at 98-95, with just over two minutes remaining.

Berry responded with a 3-point field goal to stretch GGC's lead back to six points, at 101-95. He later added a layup with 27 seconds left to maintain the visitors' six-point lead.

Following a 3-point field goal by Montreat's Aden Taylor, Chaney drained two free throw attempts with 20 seconds left to seal the victory.

Montreat made 20 3-pointers and 51 of its 81 field goal attempts came from behind the 3-point arc.

GGC has matched its season-best three-game winning streak with Saturday's triumph.

Coach's Corner
"This was one of the craziest games I've ever been a part of, having a team shoot 51 3-pointers, let alone making 20, is indescribable. Our guys did a good job in a tough small gym that got super loud. I wish we had been better in protecting the ball (15 turnovers) and not allowing offensive rebounds, but that's going to happen when they are taking longer shots because of the bigger bounces. Surviving 20 3-pointers on the road is definitely a testament of doing something pretty well for us offensively. I'm happy to get out of here with a win," said Head Coach Chase Teichmann.

Turning Point
After Montreat had cut a 27-point second-half deficit to one possession late in the contest, junior Jahiem Berry hit a huge 3-pointer to give the Grizzlies a 101-95 lead with 1:46 remaining. The guard also made a layup with 27 seconds left to once again stretch the team's advantage to six points, at 103-97.
