Junior
Peyton Hearvey scored 20 points to lead the Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball to a 62-42 victory against Bluefield University (Virginia) in the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Grizzlies (3-1) scored 13 consecutive points across the first and second quarters to take a 23-11 lead following a pair of free throws by junior
Shayla Sandiford with 7:39 left in the first half.
Sophomore
Jamya Griffin connected on a 3-point field goal from the left wing as the first quarter was winding down to give the hosts a 13-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Hearvey followed with another 3-pointer to begin the second quarter before a basket from junior
Maddie Presha and a three-point play from Sandiford extended the team's lead to 10 points, at 21-11, at the 8:12 mark of the period.
The Grizzlies outscored the Rams (0-1) 20-6 during the pivotal second quarter by forcing nine turnovers and limiting the visitors to 3-of-9 shooting from the floor.
In the second half, a 3-pointer by Bluefield's Maddie Day cut GGC's lead to 11 points, at 39-28, with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter.

However, another three-point play from Sandiford was followed by a 3-pointer by freshman
Markiesa Lancaster that pushed GGC's advantage to 45-28 at the 3:49 mark.
Hearvey scored a career-high 20 points and connected on four 3-pointers in the triumph. Freshman
Christen Collins and Sandiford each chipped in nine points, while Presha scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Grizzlies picked up their third win by 20 or more points and held the opposition to fewer than 49 points for the third time this winter.
Coach's Corner
"We played more like ourselves on the defensive side of the ball. We didn't have as many turnovers, dominated the glass and had a good bounce-back performance. We started hitting shots and we adjusted to their defense to give ourselves good offensive looks. The players did a good job of taking advantage of those opportunities in the sequence to start the second quarter," said Head Coach
Tory Wooley.
