Men’s Soccer Drops Home Ranked Battle to Bethel

Four first-half goals led Bethel University (Tennessee) to a 4-2 victory against Georgia Gwinnett College in a ranked NAIA men's soccer battle on Saturday afternoon at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

The No. 24-ranked Wildcats (7-0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the opening 25 minutes of the contest. Souleymane Balde registered a pair of goals for the visitors. The first came in the 10th minute and then he converted a penalty kick in the final minute of opening half.

Bethel took a 2-0 advantage on a goal from William Agyemang Kusi in the 14th minute before Horace Aliva Jr. capped the early offensive surge on a counter following a GGC corner kick in the 25th minute.

Striving for a comeback, the No. 15 Grizzlies (5-2-3) got on the scoreboard when freshman Luka Colic buried a shot into the upper left corner of the goal, following a left crossing pass from sophomore Pedro Nunes. Colic's fifth goal of the season trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the 38th minute.

GGC also converted off a corner kick in the 81st minute as junior Djordje Djurasinovic headed the ball into the back of the net from a pass by freshman Michael Mallaburn.

The hosts registered five of their eight shot attempts during the second half. Bethel held a 17-8 advantage in shots during the contest.

GGC freshman goalkeeper Victor Darub recorded four of his six saves in the contest while holding Bethel scoreless in the second half.

Coach's Corner
"We have got to show up with better intensity. We didn't show up in the first half and the 4-1 deficit was pretty indictive of it. It isn't tactics or technique; it's effort and energy. We were flat today. Our first half performance was unacceptable. The second half was a better representation of our team," said Head Coach Steve DeCou.

Turning Point
Bethel raced out to a 3-0 lead to grab early momentum of Saturday's ranked showdown. Souleymane Balde gave the visitors the early lead with a goal in the 10th minute. Five minutes later, William Agyemang Kusi redirected a shot off a pass from Prince Badu into the net. Then, Horace Avila Jr. converted a counter for a goal at the 25-minute mark.
